Sallie Mae Scholarship Information
The Sallie Mae Fund is proud to congratulate more than 1,000 students who received $2.5 million in scholarships this academic year to help them reach their higher education dreams. We are not only writing to tell you about our scholarship programs, but several new scholarship resources for your students on The Fund's web site.
These resources are part of The Fund's efforts to increase access to higher education for lower-income and minority students. By the year 2015, enrollment in degree-granting institutions is expected to increase to nearly 20 million. Of that increase, approximately 80 percent is projected to come from minority populations with greater financial need.
To address these challenges and affordability in general, The Sallie Mae Fund provides scholarships through a number of programs, including:
"First in My Family" Scholarship : This year, 158 Hispanic-American students who were the first in their family to attend college received scholarships ranging from $500 to $5,000.
"Unmet Need" Scholarship : This "last-dollar" program awarded more than $1 million to help 335 students bridge the financial need gap.
"American Dream" Scholarship : This year, 179 African-American students received $500,000 in scholarships.
"The Sallie Mae 911 Education Fund" : In 2007, The Fund will provide $2,500 scholarships to more than 20 students who lost immediate family in the 911 attacks.
"Writers of Passage" Scholarship : Four winners received a $5,000 scholarship and their schools receive a $20,000 grant.
"Community College Transfer Scholarships" : This program provided last-dollar scholarships to 36 Latino students transferring from a community college to an approved, accredited higher education institution. Award amounts ranged from $1,000 to $2,500.
Application deadlines for our 2008 programs vary, ranging from February to May 2008.
Lastly, The Sallie Mae Fund has added a free scholarship search function to www.salliemaefund. org .
The Fund also is providing support for two new scholarship directories geared toward minority students:
Latino College Dollars offers information on more than 300 scholarships targeting Latino high school, undergraduate and graduate students across theUnited States.
African American College Dollars includes financial resources for African-American students who are entering or continuing their postsecondary education.
Both directories will be distributed on The Sallie Mae Fund's Paying for College Bus Tour .
In mid-November, electronic versions will be available on www.salliemaefund. org .
Don't forget to check our website often, as many of The Fund's 2008-2009 scholarship programs will open shortly.
Thank you.
We hope these resources are helpful. If you have any questions about any of our programs,
please contact Laura Gemery at laura.gemery@ thesalliemaefund .org .
Sincerely,
Kathleen deLaski
